What is the Institutional Accreditation?

In its simplest form, quality assurance refers to the system, process, and mechanisms established by a higher education institution to ensure the realization of its goals, objectives, and policies. The Higher Education Quality Council makes an institutional accreditation decision by evaluating the basic activities of higher education institutions operating in Turkey (learning and teaching, research and development, service to society) at the institutional level in the context of the quality assurance system.

The Institutional Accreditation Program is carried out according to the criteria determined by THEQC. Higher education institutions that meet these criteria at an adequate level are granted full accreditation for a period of 5 years, and higher education institutions that meet it at a partial level are granted conditional accreditation for a period of 2 years. Information about the institutions of higher education that are institutionally accredited by THEQC is shared with the public in the YKS Higher Education Programs and Quotas Guide.

A higher education institution that has received the Institutional Accreditation Certificate from THEQC has established the relevant mechanisms to ensure achievement of the promised goals in its main fields of activity; it operates, monitors, and improves an important part of them well. In this context, it prioritizes the participation of all internal and external stakeholders in decision-making mechanisms, pays special attention to student feedback, and incorporates it into decision-making processes. It systematically updates the teaching programs based on the requirements of the information age, changing student characteristics, and a student-centered learning approach; monitors program-course alignment, student workload balance, the execution of the programs, and the assessment and evaluation processes. It works continuously in order to improve the learning resources and faculty members' competencies. The research competencies of the institution are continuously improved by considering factors such as student participation, doctoral and post-doctoral opportunities, as well as researcher competency. It systematically addresses social contribution activities and improves them by considering elements such as resources and diversity.

What is the Program Accreditation?

Program Accreditation refers to an external evaluation process that measures the extent to which academic and field-specific standards predetermined by an accreditation institution for a particular field are not met by a higher education program. The Higher Education Quality Council is responsible for the authorization and recognition activities of accreditation institutions in Turkey. The process of authorization of national accreditation institutions and recognition of international accreditation institutions is conducted within the scope of the principles and criteria determined by THEQC.

Since 2016, the YKS Higher Education Programs and Quotas Guide (formerly ÖSYS Higher Education Programs and Quotas Guide) contains program information accredited by accreditation institutions authorized or recognized by THEQC.
