Within the scope of the "Regional Development-Oriented Mission Differentiation and Specialization Program" carried out by the Council of Higher Education, 5 pilot universities were selected in 2016, 5 universities in 2018 and 5 new universities in 2020 reaching a total of 15 universities.
On 12 November 2021 hosted by Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, YÖK President Prof. Dr. As a result of the announcement of the inclusion of 7 more universities in the program at the meeting held under the chairmanship of Erol Özvar, the number of universities in the program increased to 22.
