The Physical Education and Sport Teaching Programme of our Faculty of Sport Sciences has completed the academic evaluation process conducted by the Council for Evaluation and Accreditation of Sport Sciences Education Programmes (SPORAK) and has been accredited for two years, valid between 16 October 2026 and 16 October 2028.
External evaluation is an indispensable component of quality assurance in higher education. Identifying a programme’s strengths and areas open to improvement through an independent perspective places institutional development on a sustainable footing. Within this framework, every stage of the SPORAK evaluation process — from the preparation of the application and the self-evaluation report to the site visit held on 4–5 May 2026 and the final decision — was carried out meticulously.
The Coordinatorship of Accreditation, Academic Assessment and Quality and the Quality Commission played a critical role as the units establishing the conceptual and operational infrastructure of this process. Planning the accreditation application procedures, ensuring coordination among units, providing guidance for the preparation of self-evaluation reports, compiling institutional data and conducting capacity-building activities in preparation for external evaluation are among the contributions of our Coordinatorship.
Stating that the completion of the accreditation process is a valuable achievement for our University, Rector Prof. Dr. Yılmaz CAN underlined that having an educational programme examined against defined criteria by an independent body, and sharing the outcome of that examination with the public, is the most concrete indicator of accountability. Prof. Dr. CAN noted that the result confirms from the outside the quality of the education offered to our students, adding that accreditation is not regarded as a destination and that the coming two years will be a period in which the programme grows stronger. He further stated that the same path is expected of other departments and programmes, and that every academic unit should contact the accreditation body in its own field, carry out its self-evaluation and begin its preparation now.
Prof. Dr. CAN emphasised that spreading the quality culture throughout the University is a priority, describing it as an understanding that reaches beyond board decisions into every classroom, every laboratory and every administrative procedure, and said that the point reached today shows this understanding is taking root in our institution. Congratulating the academic and administrative staff of the Physical Education and Sport Teaching Programme and all colleagues who contributed to the process, Prof. Dr. CAN also thanked the Quality Commission and the Coordinatorship of Accreditation, Academic Assessment and Quality for their role in managing these processes at institutional level.
Together with the First and Emergency Aid and Medical Laboratory Techniques programmes accredited within the Vocational School of Health Services and the Science Teaching and Primary Mathematics Teaching programmes accredited within the Faculty of Education, the number of accredited programmes at our University has reached five. Efforts to disseminate and sustain the quality culture across all academic units continue resolutely under the leadership of the senior management.
